“Calculations by the CBI indicated that British industry is currently losing around £13billion every year from sickness absence, the equivalent of 30million working days. Death rates in Scotland from cancer, heart disease and strokes are higher than in almost every other western industrialised country.” (Scotland’s Health at Work employer’s information pack) The TUC reports that Britain’s work force take an average of 10million days off work a year due to musculo-skeletal problems, mostly RSI and backache. 75% of illness is a direct result of stress (BMA). Work is the third most common cause of stress after bereavement and divorce. It is estimated that stress alone costs society around £3.8billion annually. Each day quarter of a million people are off work due to stress. Each year, 7 million work days are lost through stress. Stressed workers are more likely to experience RSI, according to the British Medical Journal. The Times report that stress related problems can reduce business profits by up to 10%. Work-related stress is a recognised hazard and employers have a legal duty under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 to ensure their workplaces are safe and healthy. Stress related claims have risen 86% since 1983. Education and
practical intervention such as onsite body therapy services can have a
dramatic effect on enhancing the lives of employees, thereby positively
impacting productivity, absenteeism and morale.
